Jones had a chronic illness and was hospitalized for most of his time in custody, including at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital from Sept. 6-28, 2022, and Sentara Princess Anne Hospital from Oct. 7, 2022, through his time of death shortly after 10 p.m. on Oct. 9, 2022. Due to health privacy laws, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office cannot disclose details of his medical diagnosis or treatment.

Jones’ family was permitted to visit him in the hospital prior to his death.

“Our sincere condolences go out to Juston Jones’ family and friends,” said Sheriff Ken Stolle. “We don’t want anyone to die in our custody, but this was a very ill man, and we did everything that we could for him. We ensured that he received compassionate care to the end, including having the opportunity to say goodbye to his loved ones.”

As with all in-custody deaths, the incident was reported to Virginia Beach Police Department and Virginia Department of Corrections, which reviews all in-custody deaths and has the authority to investigate. No foul play is suspected.

The official cause and manner of death is determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Norfolk.
